What is The Brainmind Residency?

In an exciting turn of events, Hbomberguy Studios has had an unexpected windfall of ad revenue this year. Since we operate primarily on Patreon support, (thank you, patrons!) we have come up with a plan to get rid of it.

As you may know, the Hbomberguy channel prominently features deep dives into media, video games, and the value of art in general, and increasingly this has led to collaborating directly with illustrators, animators, and video game developers in the production of videos. So, we at Hbomberguy Enterprises (I can call it what I want, it’s a bedroom with a computer in it) want to give back to the creative community by creating a virtual residency and mini-grant fund for emerging artists.

In particular, we’re seeking out emerging BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ artists in comics & illustration, animation, and video games. The lack of diverse representation in media has more often than not been addressed in the form of less marginalized people trying to depict experiences that they’re totally unfamiliar with, and the pursuit of more meaningful ways to change this has been pretty nebulous. It’s hard to change an industry when people from marginalized identities and backgrounds have to fight their way into it on their own! The hope is that this residency can elevate artists who haven’t been afforded opportunities otherwise, so that better representation can come from and benefit the people who reflect those identities and experiences. We want to support artists in building community with each other and contributing their voices to spaces where their work will be supported and recognized. We also just think this is a rad way to get to know artists doing cool projects.

We will select 8 residents in media arts to receive a mini-grant of $2000, as well as support through project management, guidance, and mentoring sessions from experienced professional creatives in their field, towards a project to be completed in 3 months. Residents will get to know each other and the Hbomb Studios team through feedback sessions every two weeks and meetings with mentors every month. The Brainmind Residency will take place from September to December. Their projects will also be showcased online after the residency.

We will also select 10 fellows who will be featured and each awarded $500.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be over 18 years old.

  • Applicants from any country are eligible.

  • The medium for this project must fall under the category of illustration & comics, animation, or video games.

  • Ongoing projects are allowed if they can be finished in 3 months, but we have a strong preference for projects that can be started and finished within the time period—a small-scope project you’ve always had in mind but haven’t had time for.

Applications are now closed! Thank you!

Harris, Kat, and Angie
